Geology: Mareta and Tonel Beaches

Geology: Mareta and Tonel Beaches

Mareta Beach is one of the most interesting geological sites in the Algarve. We can observe a fossil coral reef with an age of about 170 million years, fossil traces created by enigmatic animals, a vein with volcanic rock, rock structures derived from underwater landslides, and a fossil dune. The visit continues at Tonel beach, where you can see signs of movements of the Earth’s crust, such as folds and faults, and a layer full of stromatoporid fossils, a group that is attributed to the spongiums.

The activity includes a walking route of about 4.5 km, passing through sandy beach and roads with car circulation.

This activity is facilitated by Stefan Rosendahl.
